Episode 40

by Gaz on July 01, 2012 in Commentary, Episodes with 8 Comments

Episode 40 takes a look at Lucas Brunelle’s latest video, Line of Sight trailer. With the premier of this movie being today at the bicycle film festival.
Being a Lucas Brunelle film about alleycat races and the videos he has recorded over the years, it’s obvious that some of the cycling in the film can be described as silly!

With cycling the wrong way down one streets, going across intersections whilst crossing traffic is moving and almost hitting pedestrians. This episode is short but has some of the most silly moves we have seen over the last 40 episodes.

After only watching this trailer, I got a very different idea of this film. To me, it looks like a glorification of the daredevil moves of these cyclists, not the silly and dangerous reality. I look forward to your review.

Perhaps after I see the DVD (if I ever do) my opinion may change.

Sorry Gaz, I have to agree with Dan.

This guy deserves no space for glorifying inconsiderate arrogant behavior that we would condemn in any other road user.

Disappointing episode. That trailer has already been widely publicised. Why?

I have to say I’m rather gobsmacked by the way you come across here… “I’ve got a lot of respect for Lucas Brunelle…”

In your usual videos you often come across to me as overly judgmental and rather holier-than-thou. Now I can live with that because you make some reasonable observations and it’s always nice to see how people cycle and hear someone else’s point of view. Hence, even though I sometimes disagree, I follow the blog and appreciate your efforts.

But let’s make no mistake about this. These guys are habitually behaving far worse than the odd action you are usually very critical of, and I’m pretty sure Lucas Brunelle thinks that behaviour is very cool. And yet you have “a lot of respect”?

You just totally undermined the core message of this blog.

      Hi Tim,
My respect for Lucas Brunelle is for the way he has filmed these alleycat races and brought them into the limelight. Without him they would still happen but we wouldn’t know so much about them.
He was a massive influence on me, for getting my camera and for starting Silly Cyclists. I of course do not condone this sort of behavior, it is absolutely idiotic, dangerous and reckless.

I can’t be any clearer. Brunelle is not an impartial observer, making an objective documentary so we can learn from it. That would have some merit. He’s an enthusiastic participant. An earlier poster uses the term glorification, and I don’t think that’s too strong. And your comments make look like you’re joining in, which seems deeply hypocritical.

skip says don’t watch it. Fine, I have no intention of watching the film, but the people getting cut up, like pensioners just trying to cross the road at a crossing didn’t have any choice in the matter. Nice.

this film was wicked. if you dont like what there doing dont watch it. simple. Lucas Brunelle is a great film maker, and the riders like austin horse , chis Thompson and Alfred bobe jr are some of the best riders out there. I think every ones dislikes the trailer and film because they dont have the skill nor focus to be a cycle messenger or partake in an ally cat race. I know the response ” the reason we dont do silly stuff like that is because were smarter and we dont wanna get killed” i have been in a couple cats my self and if u know what u doing there’s no problem, except for the laws we break. i think every one who does not like the trailer and thinks its foolish watch the movie and it will change your mind. i have the utmost respect for messengers. thanks for reading my blurb i am a very passionate about cycling this is my point of view

Jesus Christ! I’m a cycle courier and there is NO WAY I would do any of this stuff! I think my customers would complain quite a lot (and rightly so!) if using a cycle courier meant that lives were being put at risk in this way. I consider myself to be a skilled urban cyclist – the way I behave on the road means that I very rarely have to practise advanced bike control, but I still get there quicker than a car through city traffic. (I know I joined the discussion kinda late btw…)

Cyclists are the second most vulnerable road user and must make sure that they stay as safe as possible on the roads to avoid injury. Everyone makes mistakes but a mistake on a bicycle could mean a near miss experience, injury or even death. Stay safe on the road and don't be a silly cyclist!
